Method

Abbott HCV Genotype II test which differentiates HCV to genotype level and subtypes HCV Genotype 1. The occasional sample that is unable to be genotyped with the Abbott assay is genotyped by sequencing of the HCV core region.

Diagnostic Use / Indications

HCV genotyping may be required if genotype specific treatment is considered.

Pre-Testing Requirements

HCV Viral load testing needs to be performed first. Only HCV RNA positive samples with > 1000IU/mL of HCV RNA can be consistently genotyped.

Interpretation

Genotypes will be classified using nomenclature proposed by Simmonds et al.  The six most common HCB types and their subtypes are identified.

In cases requiring genotype specific treatment A gastroenterologist (consulting in Hepatitis C) or an infectious disease consultant should be consulted to determine appropiate treatment regimes.
