Method

The Fast Track assay will detect 13 virus types or strains including: influenza type A & B viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (type a & b), human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus types 1, 2,3 &4 adenovirus, rhinovirus, enterovirus, parechovirus and bocavirus. The assay will also detect Mycoplasma pneumoniae

Diagnostic Use / Indications

Acute respiratory pathogen infections are common causes of acute local and systemic disease with substantial morbidity and mortality in paediatric, adult and immunocompromised patients.

The FTD respiratory pathogens assay is a qualitative in vitro nucleic acid amplification tests for the detection and differentiation of specific viral and bacterial nucleic acids in nasopharyngeal specimens of human origin and is an aid in the diagnosis of respiratory infections caused by the various agents above.

Specimen Collection Protocols

Sample Requirements for Respiratory Virus PCR©

Specimens: The preferred samples for respiratory viral PCR are:

  • Nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate in virus transport medium (VTM)

(Lower respiratory tract specimens (BAL, BW), nasal wash, & sputum specimens may be tested and reported where supported by validation data)

Respiratory pathogen detection depends on the collection of high quality specimens, their rapid transport to the laboratory and appropriate collection and treatment prior to lab testing.

Samples should be taken as early as possible within the first 3-5 days after onset of symptoms.

For instructions on collection of respiratory specimens refer to the Instructions for Respiratory Viral Testing

Additional Information

Application

A Commercial multiplex molecular assay for detection of respiratory viruses was introduced from 11.07.2012 . Multiplex RT-PCR assays replace DFA and viral culture providing increased sensitivity for the detection of a wider range of respiratory viruses

Detection of subtype H5 RNA will be performed for rapid diagnosis of patients with suspected Avian influenza H5N1 and H7N9.

Detection of subtype H1 and H3 RNA will be performed for molecular subtyping of Influenza A virus.
