Diagnostic Use / Indications

DHAS is the predominant steroid in the adult adrenal complex and the major adrenal androgen circulating in plasma. DHAS  assays have replaced urine 17 keto assays and helps diagnosis of endocrine disorders such as Cushing\'s disease, adrenal tumours and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Elevated levels may be diagnostic in adrenal tumours and are of value in  the diagnosis of virilizing tumours in hirsute women.  Evidence of decreased cardiovascular disease associated with elevated DHAS especially in males has been reported. Circulating adrenal androgen sulphates decline with age.

Androsterone sulphate / epiandrostene sulphate are the major 5a reduced steroids in plasma and a parrallel assay of these allows a valid measure of 5a reductase activity.
